Well what an unexpectedly different book from Katie and I can understand if some people aren't as comfortable with this tale。It is set in 1963 and it's really interesting to see how people and societies attitudes have changes since then。Yes some of the language was old fashioned but I remember people in my family using some of these terms and it certainly didn't detract from the story。This book was launched a year ago so I am somewhat late to the party in reviewing it on here however I though I Well what an unexpectedly different book from Katie and I can understand if some people aren't as comfortable with this tale。It is set in 1963 and it's really interesting to see how people and societies attitudes have changes since then。Yes some of the language was old fashioned but I remember people in my family using some of these terms and it certainly didn't detract from the story。This book was launched a year ago so I am somewhat late to the party in reviewing it on here however I though I would add my tuppence worth。I really enjoyed the older setting and reading about peoples attitudes, fashions and upper class lives。This really wouldn't happen in this day but an unmarried pregnant lady would have certainly been a scandal back then。 I really enjoyed the tale and all the twists and turns it took。 I am looking forward to her next book 'A wedding in Provence' as I believe it follows one of the other girls from this book Alexandra。As ever with Katie's books it is beautifully written with no bad language or sex scenes so suitable for all。 I love that she is advertising her book on TV this is a first for any author I believe。 。。。more

I can't believe I've just read a Katie Fforde book that I didn't love。 The story was was not written in Katie's usual style, and if I didn't know she was the author, I would not have guessed she was in a million years。 The story is unbelievable in how the characters worked thru issues so quickly and without major conflicts。 As for it to be set in the 1960's, the only reference I could see to that era was the mention of short skirts。 And how many times does an author have to use the word homosexu I can't believe I've just read a Katie Fforde book that I didn't love。 The story was was not written in Katie's usual style, and if I didn't know she was the author, I would not have guessed she was in a million years。 The story is unbelievable in how the characters worked thru issues so quickly and without major conflicts。 As for it to be set in the 1960's, the only reference I could see to that era was the mention of short skirts。 And how many times does an author have to use the word homosexual to describe another person? Too many times in this story and so not needed。 Offensive in this day and time。 I rushed to get thru this book to move on to something better。 。。。more

Not for me unfortunately I wasn’t taken by the 60’s setting and the characters seemed one dimensional。

Whittleton。 Adventures

Not what I was expecting。。。 But enjoyed it

Quite enjoyed this book although it was rather pompous & dragged out in parts then ended quite abruptly。 I have read other books from Katie & really enjoyed them。 Mostly lovely characters especially Lizzie & her friends from the cookery school & David who was very funny, would not have been popular in the 60's, the era in which the book was supposedly set but it didn't always come across as that。 Quite enjoyed this book although it was rather pompous & dragged out in parts then ended quite abruptly。 I have read other books from Katie & really enjoyed them。 Mostly lovely characters especially Lizzie & her friends from the cookery school & David who was very funny, would not have been popular in the 60's, the era in which the book was supposedly set but it didn't always come across as that。 。。。more

I love Katie Fforde books。 A friend introduced me to them several years ago and they never disappoint。 This story is about the friendship of three girls who meet at a cookery school。 They bond from day one and share their hopes and dreams of how their lives will be when the course comes to an end。 There is of course romance involved and differences between the upper and middle class beliefs and expectations。 I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend。

Love Katie Fforde。 This book is a bit different from others, but I liked it being set in the 60's, a time where massive changes took place for teenagers。Some interesting characters, enjoyable read Love Katie Fforde。 This book is a bit different from others, but I liked it being set in the 60's, a time where massive changes took place for teenagers。Some interesting characters, enjoyable read 。。。more

"Oh my golly gosh! The dialogue。 It is so stilted!"I found the dialogue, and explanations of things that did not require explaining hard work, but I was looking for an unchallenging read and this fit the bill。 "Oh my golly gosh! I can always trust I'll enjoy Katie Fforde's books and Living Dangerously is my absolute favourite however, I really struggled to finish this one。I got 10 chapters in and was so disappointed at the lack of romance。 I struggled to find a beginning, middle, and end with this book too as it just seemed to drag on and on。I won't be recommending this book to anyone I'm afraid。 I can always trust I'll enjoy Katie Fforde's books and Living Dangerously is my absolute favourite however, I really struggled to finish this one。I got 10 chapters in and was so disappointed at the lack of romance。 I struggled to find a beginning, middle, and end with this book too as it just seemed to drag on and on。I won't be recommending this book to anyone I'm afraid。 。。。more

I had to keep checking that this was actually written by Katie Fforde。 Terrible book, nothing like all her others, which I absolutely love。 I had to force myself to actually finish it。 Weak story line, terrible characters who all needed a back bone and kick up the backside and spoke and acted like the Famous Five, golly gosh and jolly hockeysticks。 Ending just fizzled out and was just ridicilous。 Worst book Katie has written and hooefully won't write one again like it。 Awful。 I had to keep checking that this was actually written by Katie Fforde。 Terrible book, nothing like all her others, which I absolutely love。 I had to force myself to actually finish it。 Weak story line, terrible characters who all needed a back bone and kick up the backside and spoke and acted like the Famous Five, golly gosh and jolly hockeysticks。 Ending just fizzled out and was just ridicilous。 Worst book Katie has written and hooefully won't write one again like it。 Awful。 。。。more

Yes indeed - a feel good romance。 Just the ting to read on a rainy day when you are feeling a bit ugghhh。The early 1960s were a time when it seemed everything was possible - coffee shops were appearing with pop music I remember one in Soho - very small with a very noisy machine to make coffee and someone singing on a guitar。 And then there were short dresses and dresses with short underneath - and Biba and Carnaby Street and youth culture against the 1950s cardigan and pearl necklace brigade it Yes indeed - a feel good romance。 Just the ting to read on a rainy day when you are feeling a bit ugghhh。The early 1960s were a time when it seemed everything was possible - coffee shops were appearing with pop music I remember one in Soho - very small with a very noisy machine to make coffee and someone singing on a guitar。 And then there were short dresses and dresses with short underneath - and Biba and Carnaby Street and youth culture against the 1950s cardigan and pearl necklace brigade it seemed。 I was a teenager in London with a friend whose father was involved in pop music and it seemed so exciting a time to be a teenager, but then life got in the way and the hope and joy died。。。 (for many)And yes, country weddings were seen as romantic and mothers who had been denied large and frothy weddings due the War wanted more for their daughters。A fun story that i enjoyed reading。 。。。more

I finished it because I kept wanting it to be better。。。I've read most of Katie Fforde's novels and while they mostly follow a fairly standard romance plot, a lot of them have a nice and interesting setting, so even when the main character is/main characters are a bit fluffy and dependent they're still fun。 Maybe others were attracted by the 1960s setting of this novel but for me it was just so。。。。neh。 I felt like I was very artificially dumped back in time with a main character who was incapable I finished it because I kept wanting it to be better。。。I've read most of Katie Fforde's novels and while they mostly follow a fairly standard romance plot, a lot of them have a nice and interesting setting, so even when the main character is/main characters are a bit fluffy and dependent they're still fun。 Maybe others were attracted by the 1960s setting of this novel but for me it was just so。。。。neh。 I felt like I was very artificially dumped back in time with a main character who was incapable of independent choice。 Definitely not one I'll come back to。 。。。more

I love Katie’s books。 This was different, set in the past and it took me a bit to get used to it。 But I love her characters and it was just what I needed at the moment。

Katie Fforde's books are a staple when I want something light-hearted and cheerful to read and this book does exactly that! It talks about a young well brought up middle class girl going to London to get some polish and acquire skills that will land her an eligible husband。 Instead of that she meets with young people her age bur different than her, sees a bit more than her present horizon and meets her love but who at the time is taken。 She falls in love and falls pregnant and we read the tale a Katie Fforde's books are a staple when I want something light-hearted and cheerful to read and this book does exactly that! The latest offering from Katie Fforde。 A bit different from her usual offerings。 Lizze moves to London to do a cookery course and stay with her aunt。 On her course she becomes friends with Meg, Vanessa and Alexandra。 She enjoys London so much she moves into a house share with her friends from the course, cuts her hair and wears minis- she also forgets that her mother wants her to meet a nice young man and settle down (the book is set in 1963)。 She also forgets about this when she meets Hugh but The latest offering from Katie Fforde。 A bit different from her usual offerings。 Lizze moves to London to do a cookery course and stay with her aunt。 On her course she becomes friends with Meg, Vanessa and Alexandra。 She enjoys London so much she moves into a house share with her friends from the course, cuts her hair and wears minis- she also forgets that her mother wants her to meet a nice young man and settle down (the book is set in 1963)。 She also forgets about this when she meets Hugh but he's already spoken for。 Will she make a success of her London life and have fun or will she have ti=o return home, settle down and have a wedding in the country。 。。。more

This was a nice read, easy to follow and enjoyable。 I loved the setting of the 60s but it often did get lost。 Katie really knows how to write a hero and boy did I love Hugo!Interesting take on the 60s and how life was, I'd recommend to any Katie Fforde fans! I typically really like books by this author, but this was a struggle。 I didn’t like that it was set in the 60s, and it actually felt like it was set in older times。 Very dated and not enough development regarding the timeline for me to feel that I was in that time period。 What the difference would be between now and then was not evident。 The writing was difficult to read which really surprises me from this author。 I couldn’t connect to the characters。 To be honest, I ended up jumping to the end I typically really like books by this author, but this was a struggle。 I didn’t like that it was set in the 60s, and it actually felt like it was set in older times。 Very dated and not enough development regarding the timeline for me to feel that I was in that time period。 What the difference would be between now and then was not evident。 The writing was difficult to read which really surprises me from this author。 I couldn’t connect to the characters。 To be honest, I ended up jumping to the ending because I couldn’t get through the book。 。。。more

#AWeddingintheCountry #NetGalley An easy to read story set in 60s Britain by this well loved author。 I found the storyline a bit predictable and certainly guessed the ending very early on but it was well written and I enjoyed the journey to get there and found the characters relevant to the era and entertaining。

DNFI am a huge fan of Katie Fforde’s and have read all of her books。 However lately some of them just aren’t’ up to her usual standard and this is one of them。 I found the characters to be too shallow and some felt familiar as if we have met them before。 Katie Fforde’s books are usually better constructed and all the plot twists and turns believable, and most of the characters likeable。 I know it was set in 1963, but I still felt that Lizzie’s mother was a major pain。 I f she was my mother I wou DNFI am a huge fan of Katie Fforde’s and have read all of her books。 However lately some of them just aren’t’ up to her usual standard and this is one of them。 I found the characters to be too shallow and some felt familiar as if we have met them before。 Katie Fforde’s books are usually better constructed and all the plot twists and turns believable, and most of the characters likeable。 I know it was set in 1963, but I still felt that Lizzie’s mother was a major pain。 I f she was my mother I would flee to London as well。 In addition the book was either too long or there was very little action as it dragged, which is why I did not finish it。 This just didn’t give me the pleasure that most of Katie Fforde’s books do。 Sad as I have read all of her books and enjoyed most of them。 。。。more

A slightly different slant in this book but containing all the expected (and enjoyable) Katie Fforde characteristics。 People to love and loathe, and those who turn out okay but deserve a damn good shaking on the way。 I am fully caught up now so may have to start rereading in order to escape from lock in。 Thank you Katie。 No spoilers

Quite possibly the worst book I’ve ever read。。。 the storyline had potential but parts of it were completely unnecessary (I’ve you’re going to spend so many times mentioning about Alexandra’s relatives, at least have them appear in end story at some point), and others just unbelievable。。 the dialogue was strained at best, woeful at worst。 I just couldn’t enjoy this book and it felt like a chore to read。 Completely missed the mark。

A slight departure from Fforde’s usual format, as this novel is set in the 1960s。 I enjoyed the details about the cookery course and the rather Bohemian house share the main character embarks on。 Some of the relationships felt a little undernourished but the setting allowed to Fforde to reflect on how attitudes to marriage, careers, etc。 have changed since the 60s。
